Among the most frequent causes of falls from a height of more than 2 metres, relative to a stable floor, around 17% of accident cases according to INAIL data, is the incorrect use of portable ladders.

What are portable ladders?

PORTABLE ladders are understood to be equipment with rungs or steps, transportable and installable by hand, used to overcome a difference in level and reach workplaces at height for a short period of time.

The use of ladders is only permitted when other systems deemed safer, such as scaffolding, are not justified due to the low level of risk, short duration of use or are not practicable due to unalterable characteristics of the workplace, such as the space available.

The right ladder, i.e. the one best suited to one's needs, must be identified by taking the following characteristics into account:

  • Kind of ladder

  • Working height and ladder height

  • Maximum capacity

  • Space for manoeuvre

  • Safety sistem

These are those that, taking into account compliance and safety criteria, adapt to operational scenarios by combining different types with construction materials.

How to maintain stairs?

In order to ensure the longevity of ladders, the conditions of use listed in the manufacturer's mandatory manuals (e.g. maximum load, correct support, orientation, elongation) and proper storage should be observed.

Proper maintenance includes:

- checking the condition of components, uprights and pegs;

- verification of the connection between the components;

- verification of non-slip surfaces.

Choosing ladders that allow for independent replacement of components (wheels, steps, handrails) is the right solution to ensure durability.
